IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State women's basketball team (5-2, 0-0 Big 12) fell to in-state rival Iowa (8-2 0-0 B1G) tonight, 76-67, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. Sophomore Jadda Buckley scored a season-high 25 points to lead all scorers. Iowa State leads the Hawkeyes in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series, 11-4, after the loss.
How it happened…
The Hawkeyes would waste no time getting on the board as sophomore guard Ally Disterhoft knocked down a three-ball with just 14 ticks off the game clock. After a jumper by Whiney Jennings stretched Iowa's lead to eight points, the Cyclones would cut their deficit to 20-18 forcing an Iowa timeout at the 8:00 mark.
With 5:26 remaining in the first half, a 3-pointer from Kidd Blaskowsky assisted by Emily Durr would claim Iowa State's first lead of the night, 23-22, but the Hawkeyes would close out the first half with a 12-6 run to take a 44-35 lead into the locker room.
Shooting 40 percent from the field, the Cyclones were led by Jadda Buckley scoring 14 in the first 20 minutes. On the defensive end, Iowa State would hold star point guard Samantha Logic to just five points on four attempts. Iowa State would establish an edge on the boards, out-rebounding the Hawks 21-9 in the first half.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Iowa would build their largest lead of the game, 49-39, but a pair of free throws and a drive to the hoop by Nikki Moody would cut the lead to six. Midway through the second half, Blaskowsky would collect momentum for the Cyclones on a 3-pointer assisted by Buckley, trimming Iowa's lead, 64-58.
Four points from Disterhoft and a pair of Whitney Jennings steals in the final minutes would help the Hawkeyes hold off the Cyclones and close out the game, 76-67.
Three Cyclones recorded double-digit scoring performances with Jadda Buckley (25), Nikki Moody (12) and Kidd Blaskowsky (11).
Iowa State would convert on 17 of their 20 free throw attempts, while shooting 36.2 percent from the field including 8-of-29 from beyond the arc. Seanna Johnson led the Cyclones with 12 rebounds, as the team pulled down 41 total boards.
Game Ball Goes To...
Jadda Buckley. In her second Cy-Hawk matchup, Buckley tallied a season high 25 points, her 20th career double-digit scoring effort, shooting 8-of-13 from the field. Buckley racked up 19 against in-state rival Iowa last season as a freshman in Hilton Coliseum.
