AMES, Iowa – No. 14 Iowa State used a 26-2 run to blow open a close game and defeat Iowa, 90-75, Friday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It was Iowa State's largest margin of victory in Iowa City, surpassing the 13-point win in 1999. Iowa State moves to 7-1 this season, while Iowa falls to 8-3.
With the win, Iowa State clinches at least a tie in the 2014-15 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.
Keys of the Game
After Iowa tied the game at 33-33 with one minute left in the first half, Monté Morris got in the lane for a layup to put the Cyclones up two. Iowa was holding for the last shot but Morris blocked a shot and ISU raced down the court and found Matt Thomas for a three at the buzzer. It was Thomas' only basket of the game, but it was a huge one as it gave the Cyclones a 38-33 lead at the break.
ISU never looked back as it continued the run into the second half and extended the lead to 59-35. The Cyclones started the second half with a miss but made the next 10 field goals in the run, including four three-pointers.
The Cyclones shot 63.3 percent from the field in the second half and 53.1 percent for the game.
Players of Note...
Abdel Nader and Naz Long had season-highs of 19 and 21 points, respectively. The duo connected on 9-of-15 threes as the Cyclones made 12-of-27 as a team from long distance.
Nader and Long led five Cyclones in double-figures. Georges Niang had 16 points, Morris added 14 and Dustin Hogue chipped in 13 points to go along with 13 boards.
Morris had six of Iowa State's 22 assists, while Niang had seven dimes.
