Editor's Note: DeAndre Kane is a senior on the Iowa State men's basketball team working toward earning his Master's Degree in Higher Education. As part of his Higher Ed 591 course, Kane will be doing a weekly blog to give fans an inside look at his life as a student-athlete. The course is of the field experience variety and he'll be focusing on the role of media communications in higher education and athletics.
The life of a student-athlete can be challenging as we balance both academics and athletics. We dedicate so much time to our sport through commitments such as conditioning, weightlifting, practice, film, traveling and games. It's just as important that we focus on academics. So for me and my teammates to be successful with our classwork we try to get most of our work done during the day at the Hixson-Lied Center. At the center we have access to computer labs, tutors and mentors that help us with organization and time management. We also have an academic coordinator. The academic coordinators job is to help us schedule classes around our athletic schedules, check grades, set us up with tutors and gives coach feedback about each players weekly progress. Our cordinator also travels with us so we can do study hall on the road to stay on top of our schoolwork when we miss classes for games. I think that it's important for student-athletes to use these resources to be successful in both academics and athletics as we prepare for our futures.
Cheer us on at our next game Saturday when we take on K-State. Go Cyclones!
