AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women's basketball team (14-5, 5-3 Big 12) suffered its first home loss of the season to Kansas (12-9, 3-5 Big 12), 61-56 on Wednesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones were led by 15 points from
Seanna Johnson while
Nikki Moody posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists. Kidd Blaskowsky had 11 points.
How It Happened…It was the freshman
Bryanna Fernstrom who got things going for Iowa State with the first four points for the Cyclones. On the other end, Iowa State didn't have an answer early for Kansas standout Chelsea Gardner, who grabbed 12 first half points on 6-of-7 shooting. It was a rough start overall for Iowa State as 11 first-half turnovers held the Cyclones from opening up a lead. However, despite the turnovers the Cyclones entered the locker room with a two-point lead over the Jayhawks, 24-22 on the back of a 7-0 run to close the first half.
Iowa State continued that momentum out of the locker room in the second half as ISU scored the first six points of the frame with Kidd Blaskowsky netting a 3-pointer just 21 seconds into the second to give Iowa State a 27-22 lead. On the other end Williamson picked off a Jayhawk pass and
Seanna Johnson completed an old-fashioned 3-point play to give Iowa State its largest lead thus far, 30-22 with 18:50 to play in the second.
Kansas would close the lead to two, 40-38 before Moody would kick it to a wide-open Blaskowsky for three. On the other end, Blaskowsky would record a steal and take it to the hoop for a seven-point Iowa State lead, 45-38.
With 11:03 to go, the Cyclones led 47-40, but the offense vanished as ISU did not score for 4:33 until a Johnson lay-in made it 49-43 Cyclones. KU then ran off back-to-back 3-pointers to tie proceedings at 49-49. With the score 51-51, Gardner struck again as the senior got a three-point play to move the Jayhawks ahead for good at 54-51.
The Jayhawks struggled to close the game out at the line, giving ISU a shot down 57-56, but a turnover by Moody and a missed 3-pointer by the Cyclone senior gave KU enough opportunities to close it out. Natalie Knight and Gardner put it away at the stripe, making KU's final four free throws.
Game Ball Goes To…Seanna Johnson. The Cyclone sophomore was crucial for the Iowa State effort in the second half, recording 11 of her team-high 15 points in the second stanza. She also posted eight rebounds, two steals and two assists.
