FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU's Chelsea Prince scored with 1.6 seconds to go to give the Horned Frogs an 86-84 win over the Iowa State women's basketball team Wednesday night at the TCU University Recreation Center. The loss dropped ISU to 10-3 on the season, 1-1 in Big 12 play. TCU is now 9-4 overall and 1-1 in conference competition.
In defeat, Brynn Williamson recorded a career-high 24 points, 18 of which came in the first half. The Cyclones had one of its top free throw shooting evenings in program history, going 25-of-26 from the free throw line at a 96.2 percent rate.
How it Happened…
The first half totally belonged to Iowa State as the Cyclones ran out to an 11-0 advantage across the first six minutes of the game. The Cyclones maintained a double-figures lead throughout the rest of the half, but piled it on late, going on a 10-0 run across the final 1:26, with Emily Durr putting away a jumper as time expired to give ISU a 44-21 halftime advantage.
Iowa State expanded its lead to 51-27 before the Frogs struck back. TCU went on to score 27 of the game's next 38 points to reduce the Iowa State lead to single digits at 62-54. Four straight Williamson free throws looked to have steadied the ship to get ISU back up 12, but TCU ripped off eight points in under a minute to drag the ISU lead down to 68-64. The next possession, Blaskowsky stepped up with a big 3 to restore ISU's lead to seven.
The joy was short lived as the next possession saw the end of Nikki Moody's night as she picked up her fifth foul with over six minutes left. The Horned Frogs pulled out the ensuing five points to take the ISU advantage down to 71-69. Blaskowsky came to the rescue again as she hit another 3-pointer to give the Cyclones another seven-point advantage at 76-69.
The Frogs reduced the ISU lead to one at 78-77, but the Cyclones continued to be reliable from the line as Jadda Buckley made four in a row to up the advantage to 82-77. With 1:02 remaining, a vexed flagrant foul on Seanna Johnson saw a five-point possession for the Horned Frogs to tie the game at 82-82. A Buckley turnover, one of 16 ISU second half turnovers, led to a Prince lay-up to give the Frogs their first lead at 84-82. The lead lasted three seconds as Johnson headed to the line to make a pair to tie it again. After Prince's lay-up with 1.6 seconds left, ISU had one last chance, but its in-bounds pass was deflected and TCU left victorious.
Game Ball Goes to…
Brynn Williamson. A commanding performance by the senior as Williamson's first half performance would have considered outstanding for 40 minutes, much less 20. She led the Cyclones with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field which included four 3-pointers. It was not just putting the ball in the basket that saw Williamson dominate as she also contributed seven rebounds in the first half.
