LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech (4-2, 1-2 Big 12) defeated Iowa State (2-3, 1-1 Big 12) by a score of 66-31 at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas on Saturday. ISU freshman Mike Warren ran for 245 yards against the Red Raiders, the eighth-best single-game rushing effort in school history.
How It Happened
Texas Tech got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 10-0 lead following a field goal and DeAndre Washington touchdown run on TTU's first two drives of the game. Iowa State would respond with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Sam B. Richardson to Quenton Bundrage to cut the deficit to 10-7 with 7:03 left in the opening quarter.
The two teams would then trade touchdown drives, as the Red Raiders ended a high-scoring first quarter with a 75-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes to Jakeem Grant. Iowa State then put together a nine-play, 68-yard drive, culminating in a one-yard touchdown run by freshman Joshua Thomas to make the score 17-14 early in the second quarter.
The Red Raiders proceeded to score 21 unanswered points, all touchdown passes from Mahomes, as Texas Tech built a 38-14 lead with 2:42 remaining in the half. Thomas punched in his second touchdown of the game from one yard out to make the score 38-21 at the intermission.
Iowa State made it a two score game with a 20-yard field goal from Cole Netten to open the scoring in the second half, cutting the deficit to 38-24. However, the next four scores of the game would belong to the Red Raiders, as TTU built its lead to 66-24.
Joel Lanning found the end zone on a short touchdown run on the Cyclones' final possession of the game, the first score of the redshirt sophomore's career.
