LUBBOCK, Texas – The Iowa State women's basketball team fell to Texas Tech 71-58 Wednesday evening at United Supermarkets Arena. The loss drops ISU to 15-8 overall and 6-6 in the Big 12. TTU improves to 14-10 overall, 4-8 in the league.
Bryanna Fernstrom led the Cyclones with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting while Nikki Moody contributed 17 points and five assists in defeat. Iowa State struggled from 3-point range, going 3-of-20 from deep while TTU had one of its best games from long-range, going 10-of-22. It was just the third time all season TTU made at least 10 3-pointers.
How it Happened
The first six minutes of the game belonged to the Cyclones, as ISU held the early advantage, building up a four-point lead on multiple occasions as Bryanna Fernstrom and Nikki Moody were strong early. After a quick exchange of the lead had ISU on top 15-14, the Lady Raiders offense exploded. TTU went on a 21-5 run to go from down one, to up 15 in the space of 7:30 of game action.
The Raiders were efficient from 3-point territory, making seven of their first 11 3-point tries, an outburst for a Tech team that averaged just over 5.0 treys per game at just under 33 percent efficiency. A 3-pointer by Minta Spears, the eighth of the half, gave TTU its largest lead of the half at 44-26, but Moody sank a jumper as time expired to make it 44-28 Lady Raiders at the break.
The second half started out rocky for the Cyclones. ISU reduced to deficit to 13 points at 47-34 TTU, but then the Lady Raiders ran off a 6-0 run to get its biggest lead of the game at 53-34. At that point, ISU finally made its move to get back into the game, going on a 10-0 across 3:32 of game action. Fernstrom contributed six points to the run to reduce the Tech lead to 53-44.
From there both teams went into a tailspin shooting, as the Cyclones went on a stretch of 2-for-10 shooting. However, things were worse for the Lady Raiders as they missed 13 consecutive field goal attempts. TTU was able to maintain a steady lead at the free throw line, matching ISU's baskets at the charity stripe.
The Cyclones would reduce the lead one final time to seven points with 1:15, but the Lady Raiders closed it out at the charity stripe, where they were 17-of-23 for the game. ISU was also good from the stripe, going 15-of-18 at 83 percent.
