AMES, Iowa – The future is bright for the Iowa State volleyball team, and more proof of that came Thursday when the Cyclones' incoming recruiting class was ranked as the eighth-best in the country by PrepVolleyball.com.
The class is the second-highest ranked in program history, with the class of 2012 that featured current Cyclone All-Americans
Mackenzie Bigbee and
Caitlin Nolan, along with redshirt juniors
Morgan Kuhrt and
Natalie Vondrak, ranking sixth that year.
"We are really proud of, and excited about our No. 8 recruiting class," Iowa State head coach
Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "This is an exceptional group of competitors, athletes, students and volleyball players. They have the potential to have a huge impact on our program over the next four-to-five years."
The website annually ranks the top recruiting classes in the nation, and the class of 2015 marks the sixth time Iowa State has been among the top-25 classes nationally and the third time ISU has found its way into the top-10. ISU found its way back into the website's ranked recruiting classes after spending the last two years among the "highest honorable mention" classes.
Iowa State's class features three of the top-35 recruits nationally as ranked by PrepVolleyball.com, joining Texas and Wisconsin as the only teams to have at least three top-35 recruits. The trio is led by setter Remi Bowman of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, who comes in as the No. 22 recruit nationally, tied with former Cyclone middle blocker Jamie Straube as the highest-ranked recruit in program history. Outside hitter Jess Schaben of Harlan, Iowa is ranked as the No. 27 recruit by PrepVolleyball.com and right-side hitter Hannah Bailey of Cameron, Wisconsin is the No. 33 recruit.
The class is also boosted by a pair of in-state stars in setter/defensive specialist Hali Hillegas of Charles City and Abigail Phillips of Marion, Iowa.
The classes' final piece is already in Ames in middle blocker
Grace Lazard. The first international recruit in the Johnson-Lynch era, the London native enrolled at Iowa State in January and took part in spring practice and competition.
The 2015 Iowa State volleyball season will start on Aug. 28. The 2015 season schedule will be released at a later date.
