The Iowa State Athletics Department has appointed Kurt Hunsaker, who spent the last three years with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as Assistant Director of Academic and Membership Affairs, as Director of Compliance.
Senior Associate Athletics Director of Student Services Patrice Feulner made the announcement today.
"I am extremely excited for Kurt to join Iowa State Athletics as our Director of Compliance," Feulner said. "Kurt is an outstanding professional who will bring tremendous experience and energy to our department. This is an incredibly important position for our department and I feel confident that with Kurt's passion for helping student-athletes succeed, we will continue to make great strides to ensure the Cyclone experience is extremely positive for our student-athletes."
Hunsaker has eight years of experience working in collegiate athletics, including the last three years at the NCAA where he served as a lead coordinator for student-athlete academic waivers. Hunsaker has been a valuable member of a number of student-athlete welfare committees during his time with the NCAA. He was a liaison to the Subcommittee on Student-Athlete Academics, the Progress-Toward-Degree Committee and the N4A.
Hunsaker also assisted in providing rules interpretations to NCAA member institutions and processing Academic Progress Rate (APR) adjustments, corrections, improvement plans and Academic Performance Program (APP) waivers.
"I am excited for and honored by the opportunity Patrice Feulner and Jamie Pollard have extended to me and my family to join the Cyclone family," Hunsaker said. "I have been so impressed by the culture that has been established within Iowa State athletics, and I look forward to contributing to an atmosphere that encourages hard work, excellence and, above all else, the success of our student-athletes."
Prior to his stint with the NCAA, Hunsaker worked in the Texas Tech Athletics Department from 2008-13. He began his tenure in Lubbock as an eligibility and financial aid coordinator and was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance in 2010.
Hunsaker helped coordinate the activities of the Red Raider "compliance team," as well as the daily operations of the institution's six-person compliance office, and assisted in implementing a comprehensive monitoring program for the athletic department.
A native of Fruit Heights, Utah, Hunsaker earned his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University-Idaho in 2005. He was awarded his Juris Doctor at the University of Nebraska College of Law in 2008 where he was the President of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society.Â
He and his wife, Kristy, have four children.
