MANHATTAN, Kansas – Iowa State dropped a 20-19 heartbreaker to Kansas State on Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The Cyclones drop to 7-5 and 5-4 in Big 12 play with the loss, while K-State improves to 7-5 and 5-4 in conference play.
Keys of the Game…
The Cyclones found themselves trailing 7-6 at halftime despite out-gaining Kansas State 191-53 in the first 30 minutes. Iowa State twice drove deep into Wildcat territory, but were unable to find pay dirt in the opening half, as Garrett Owens drilled a pair of field goals to have ISU within one at the break.
Iowa State found its rhythm offensively after emerging from the locker room. The Cyclones marched 85 yards in 11 plays on their first drive of the half to grab their first lead of the game. The drive culminated in a 9-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Kempt to Marchie Murdock, giving Iowa State a 12-7 advantage after a failed two-point conversion attempt. The Cyclones extended the lead to 19-7 on its ensuing drive, a 10-play, 62-yarder that ended with a 3-yard touchdown reception by Hakeem Butler, Kempt's second TD pass of the day.
K-State cut ISU's lead to 19-14 on a three-yard jump pass from Alex Barnes to Winston Dimel with 6:07 left in the game.
Things took a negative turn for the Cyclones from that point forward. On the ensuing ISU drive, twice flags were thrown against K-State that would have extended the drive, allowing the Cyclones to continue to run out the clock. On both occasions, the flag was picked up by the officials. Iowa State, which entered the game as one of the least-penalized teams in the country, was hit with nine penalties for 85 yards, while the Wildcats were whistled for just four penalties for 45 yards.
K-State would complete its rally with a 10-play, 87-yard drive, scoring the game-winning touchdown with no time left on the game clock to win, 20-19.
