EUGENE, Oregon – For the second time in 48 hours and the second-straight outdoor season in the triple jump, Jhoa Luque brought home a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Saturday afternoon at Hayward Field. Luque's performance earned her First Team All-America honors for the event, she is now an eight-time All-American during her Cyclone career.
Luque's fourth-place finish today, along with her fourth place finish in the long jump two days ago, brought home 10 team points for Iowa State, allowing ISU to finish tied for 21st in the team standings.
Similar to the Thursday long jump, it was a close call for Luque to make it into the final rounds at all as a foul on her first jump and a (for her standards) underwhelming 43-0 1/2 (13.12m) left her in 10th place after two rounds.
Being later in the jump order, Luque was down to 13th by the time her number came up again. However, like she has many times during the outdoor season, she delivered. A wind-aided 43-7 (13.28m) moved her up to eighth place, and after a couple nervous moments waiting for the field to finish up the third round, she was on to the finals and the three extra tries.
A legal, but non-improving, jump of 42-8 (13.00m), and her fifth jump was a foul that kept her in eighth place heading into the final round. Like many times this season, the Venezuelan saved her best for last as she broke out a wind-legal personal best of 44-2 1/2 to move up to fourth place.
Luque finishes 2017 with her fourth All-America honor of the season, the eighth of her career. She is also now a three-time First Team All-American.
