AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team will have four representatives at this weekend's Junior and Senior World Team Trials. Incoming freshman Austin Gomez (60 kg), along with freshmen Kanen Storr (66 kg) and Sammy Colbray (96 kg) will be looking to earn a spot on the junior team. 2015 NCAA Champion Kyven Gadson (97 kg) will compete for a spot on the senior squad.
"We got four guys looking to make a World Team and compete for a World Championship," associate head coach Mike Zadick said. "This is an opportunity for them to represent our team and their country. You have all of the who's-who and studs at every weight. Every match is going to be tough."
The tournament will run from June 9-10 in Lincoln, Neb. The juniors will wrestle on Friday, and the seniors will scarp on Saturday.
"It's great exposure," Zadick said about the opportunity to compete at the Trials. "These guys' preparation for this started when they first started wrestling. Since we've been here, we're just trying to build off of that."
Both Storr and Colbray qualified for the trials at the UWW Junior National Championships in April. At 66 kg, Storr took runner-up honors, while Colbray finished third at 96 kg.
Gomez, the No. 11 recruit in the class of 2017, was a member of the Cadet Pan American Team in 2015 where he won titles in both Greco and Freestyle. He was named the Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.
Gadson qualified for the Trials back in February when he was the top United States medalist at the Dave Schultz Memorial International at 97 kg. He cemented his spot when he won the 2017 US Open this May.
Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Flowrestlong.org ($) will stream every match from every mat from the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Be sure to follow @cyclonewr on Twitter for live updates and match-by-match results.
