AKRON, Ohio – Iowa State improved to 2-1 on the season with a dominant 41-14 win at Akron on Saturday. The Cyclones controlled the battle behind a balanced offensive attack that featured a 24-33, 317-yard performance by quarterback Jacob Park, while sophomore running back David Montgomery rambled for 127 yards and a touchdown
The Cyclones opened up a 14-0 lead with a dominant first quarter, taking control behind a 170-34 yard advantage in the game's first 15 minutes. Iowa State's first score came by way of an eight-play, 93-yard march, culminating in a seven-yard touchdown pass from Park to Allen Lazard.
Following an ISU defensive stop, Iowa State marched 71 yards behind a 37-yard reception by Trever Ryen and a 24-yard keeper by Park. Mike Warren provided the exclamation point with a one-yard touchdown run for his first score of the season, giving the Cyclones a two-score lead.
The Zips bounced back with a pair of touchdowns of their own in the second quarter, cutting Iowa State's lead to 20-14 at halftime, while the ISU's Garrett Owens drilled a pair of 40-yard field goals.
Coming out of the halftime locker room, Iowa State pulled away, out-scoring Akron 21-0 in the second half. The Cyclones set the tone with back-to-back touchdown drives in the third stanza, starting with another Park strike to Marchie Murdock, as the duo hooked up for a 43-yard score. Following a Joel Lanning interception on the ensuing Akron drive, Montgomery punched in another Iowa State touchdown on a nine-yard run to give the Cyclones a 34-14 advantage.
The Cyclone defense finished the contest with a second-half shutout, while Iowa State tacked on one more score via a 14-yard Park rushing score in the fourth quarter.
Keys of the Game
Iowa State's defense was active and opportunistic, with six sacks, 11 tackles for loss and three forced turnovers in Saturday's contest. Linebacker Joel Lanning led the way with eight tackes, 1.5 sacks, an interception and a pass break-up.
The Cyclones' three turnovers tied a season-high, and came at opportune moments. Lanning and Braxton Lewis came up with interceptions, while linebacker Marcel Spears forced a fumble that was recovered by Brian Peavy.
Iowa State had its best offensive output of the season, totaling 508 yards on the day. The Cyclones had a balanced attack throughout, with 317 yards through the air and 191 on the ground.
Players of Note...
Park connected on 24-of-33 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns. The junior hit seven different receivers on the afternoon.
Trever Ryen was Park's top target. The senior racked up six catches for 80 yards on seven targets. While the scoring strikes went to Murdock and Lazard, Park continually found Ryen to keep drives alive.
On the ground, David Montgomery was once again Iowa State's top option. The sophomore continued to be effective out of the backfield with 127 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. He also had five catches for 46 yards on the day.
Linebacker Willie Harvey was in the Zips' backfield all game, racking up seven tackles, including three for loss. Harvey and Lanning both tallied 1.5 sacks on the day.
Cyclone Quick Hits
*This is the second time in school history that Iowa State has scored 40 or more points in each of its first three games of a season (1976).
*ISU recorded over 400 yards of total offense for the sixth consecutive game, a new school record.
*ISU's six sacks today are its most since Sept. 5, 2015 (6 vs. UNI).
*Iowa State allowed just 38 rushing yards today, its lowest total since Oct. 3,2015 (38 vs. Kansas).
*The Cyclones improved to 5-2 under Matt Campbell in games that it won the turnover battle.
*The 27-point margin of victory is Iowa State's largest in a road victory since Nov. 17, 2012 (51-23 at Kansas).
Up Next
Iowa State will have a bye next week before returning to Jack Trice Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 28 to open Big 12 play against Texas. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN, with kick-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
