AMES, Iowa – When the Iowa State football team enters Jack Trice Stadium tonight to face Texas in an ESPN televised game, the players will be sporting a "Cyclone" helmet decal.
It is the latest step in Coach Matt Campbell's transformation of the Cyclone football identity.
The new Cyclone logo was created by Joe Bosack & Co. this summer to serve as a nickname logo for the athletics department. The I-State mark will continue to be Iowa State's primary athletics mark. The athletics department will also continue to include logos of Cy as a mascot mark in its portfolio.
Iowa State's sports teams have been known as the Cyclones since 1895 when Coach Pop Warner's team upset Northwestern 36-0 and a Chicago Tribune headline the next day reported "Struck by a Cyclone: It comes from Iowa and Devastates Evanston Town."
Iowa State has used various forms of Cyclone marks occasionally in its history. But, officially adding a Cyclone symbol that depicts the school's long-time nickname this season is a significant brand enhancement.
Merchandise with the new mark is on sale tonight at Cy's Locker Room locations in Jack Trice Stadium (Nike tent, Sukup End Zone Club and east concourse tent) and at the ISU Book Store (east side of the ISU Alumni Center as well as inside the Alumni Center).
Beginning Friday morning, merchandise with the new mark will be on sale at these outlets: Cy's Locker Room (www.cyslockerroom.com), Iowa State Bookstore (www.isubookstore.com), Scheels (www.scheels.com), Barefoot Campus Outfitters (www.barefootcampusoutfitter.com), Fanatics (www.Fanatics.com), Campustown Spirit (www.bkstr.com/campustownspiritstore), Dogtown University (www.dogtownu.com), Strawberry Patch (www.strawpatch.com), Moorman Clothiers (www.moormanclothiers.com) and Intensitee.
