Ames, Iowa – The USTFCCCA announced its regional award winners today. Junior Edwin Kurgat was named the recipient of the Bill Bergan Award, sophomore Cailie Logue was named the Women's Midwest Athlete of the Year and Amy Rudolph was named the Women's Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
Kurgat has been an excellent addition to head coach Martin Smith's team this season. Kurgat was the individual Big 12 Champion and Midwest Regional Champion this season, becoming the school's first ever Big 12 Champ. He also posted a runner-up finish in a loaded field at the Nuttycombe Invitational to earn Big 12 Runner of the Week honors.
Logue was the 2017 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and there has been no sophomore slump for the Erie, Kansas native. Logue was also the individual champion at both the Big 12 Championship and the Midwest Regional Championship, knocking off All-American Sharon Lokedi in both races.
In her first season as the Iowa State women's head coach, Rudolph's team has rallied behind her. After an impressive ninth-place showing at the Nuttycombe Invitational, the Cyclones have since won the Bradley Pink Classic, the Big 12 Championship and the Midwest Regional Championship. The conference and regional titles are Iowa State's third in the last three years and its seventh in the last eight seasons.
Both the Iowa State men's and women's teams have qualified for the 2018 NCAA Championships. The national championships are set to be run on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Madison, Wisc. The women's 6k will begin at 10:45 a.m., followed by the men's 10k at 11:45 a.m. from the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
