AMES, Iowa – Iowa State football seniors spent the morning testing out in front of NFL scouts in the school's annual Pro Day.
Thirteen former Cyclones – Mackenro Alexander, Brian Bobek, Jake Campos, Kamari Cotton-Moya, Colin Downing, Evrett Edwards, Robby Garcia, Joel Lanning, Allen Lazard, Marchie Murdock, Garrett Owens, Trever Ryen and Reggie Wilkerson – performed various drills in front of scouts representing 31 NFL teams.
Lazard, a two-time First-Team All-Big 12 honoree, was making his case for the second time after participating at the NFL Scouting Combine in early March. A projected middle-round pick, Lazard ran an impressive 4.55 40-yard dash at the Combine and opted to skip the 40 at ISU Pro Day.
Lazard instead showcased his skills by running routes that made him the greatest receiver in Cyclone history. He was happy to be back in Ames and anxious for the NFL Draft, April 26-28.
"I really enjoyed this process," Lazard said. "It's been a great process. Just being able to go out there and try to compete. I wouldn't have been able to have the success I did as far as numbers and everything if it wasn't for my support group. I'm very thankful to be able to compete in front of the coaching staff, the fans and everyone."
Lanning also returned to Ames for the first time after scripting one of the greatest stories of the 2017 college football season. In his first season at linebacker, Lanning earned First-Team All-America honors by the Football Writers Association of America after leading the Cyclones in tackles with 114.
Lanning was three-way player for the Cyclones in 2017, excelling on defense, offense and special teams. He is hoping his incredible versatility will help him as the Draft nears. He was asked by a scout to run routes and established his personal best in the bench press lifting the bar 26 times.
"Who knows what position they want me at, but hopefully it's linebacker," Lanning said. "If they want me at fullback, I'm down to do whatever. I am going to stick around here and continue training and continue to work on what I need to do to get better at."
