Hammer Throw Highlights Friday at Arizona State

TEMPE, Arizona – Iowa State's throwers highlighted the first day of the Sun Angel Track Classic at Arizona State on Friday. The Cyclones saw three of its five entrants in the hammer throw competitions pick up personal bests, while Tessa Krempel got a first-place finish. On the track, Adriana Kammerer recorded a personal best to highlight the ISU effort.
The men's hammer throw saw Vlad Pavlenko make another move up Iowa State's all-time record list for the event, as he recorded a personal-best throw of 199-0 (60.67m) to finish sixth in the Premiere competition. Pavlenko now ranks fourth in ISU history in the event, improving on his previous best from the Tulsa Duels last month by over four feet.
In the open hammer throw competition, Chris Celona took third, missing his personal best by six inches with a best toss of 188-3 (57.38m), while Brett Peters set a new personal best at 177-8 (54.15m) to finish sixth.
Christabel Okeke set a new personal best in the hammer throw, taking fifth in the women's premiere competition with a best throw of 186-9 (56.93m). After fouling on her first two throws, Okeke got on the board with her third and then established her new career-best on her fourth attempt. In the open division, Tessa Krempel got the win, taking first place with a best throw of 170-3 (51.91m).
On the track, Abby Caldwell made her first appearance in the steeplechase in over two years, with ISU's school record holder finishing third in 11:13.90. In the women's 3,000, Adriana Kammerer dropped 11 seconds off her personal best, with the Creighton transfer taking 11th place in 10:22.84.
