Orrego Heads To World Championships

STUTTGART, Germany – Ariana Orrego is set to represent her home country Peru in the 49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships held in Stuttgart, Germany. The event will span Oct. 4-13, with Orrego beginning competition on Oct. 5.
Orrego has had a number of opportunities to compete on the international stage over the last few years. In 2015, she competed in the World Championships, finishing 62nd in the all-around. The next year, she was the 2016 South American Champion in the vault and uneven bars, while also earning a spot in the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
After two years with the Cyclones, Orrego ramped up international competition this year by earning gold on beam in the South American Championships, also bringing home silver in floor and the all-around in June's event. She followed up the excellent showing by earning a spot in the beam finals at the 2019 Pan-American Games in late July.
"I am very happy that I got this opportunity to represent my country in such a big meet," Orrego said. "Iowa State has helped me a lot. I'm really happy and thankful to train here with the team and coaches. They are really nice and supportive."
Orrego begins competition with subgroup nine on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 6:30 a.m. Central. She will begin the World Championships with mixed group nine on vault. The top-24 all-around competitors after qualifications will advance to Thursday's finals that start at 9 a.m. CST on Oct. 10. The top eight finishers on each apparatus will move to the apparatus finals, which will take place on Oct. 12 and 13.
