CORVALLIS, Ore. – Iowa State (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) fought hard, but ultimately fell to Oregon State (2-0, 0-0 Pac 12), 80-74, on Saturday at Gill Coliseum.
How It Happened
Iowa State and Oregon State traded the lead, back and forth in the first half. The Beavers went on a 15-0 run to take a 35-23 lead at the six-minute mark. A George Conditt IV flush ended the Beavers' run. OSU extended their lead to as many as 14 in the first half, but Iowa State was able to cut the deficit to nine at the intermission, 43-34.
Oregon State's first-half lead was thanks in part to its work behind the three-point line. Oregon State finished the first half shooting 7-11 from deep. Iowa State struggled to connect from behind the arc in the first half, converting on 3-11 attempts from downtown.
OSU came out firing in the second half, pushing its lead up to 11 points. Iowa State clawed back, cutting the Beavers' lead down to four points. A Cyclone 5-0 run with just under 10 minutes to go in the game forced an Oregon State timeout.
Out of that timeout the Cyclones went on a 7-0 run and held a 66-65 lead at the under-eight timeout.
Down the stretch, it was Oregon State's three-point shooting that made the difference. Tres Tinkle finished the game 6-8 from three and hit two of those with under two minutes to go in the game.
