LINCOLN, Nebraska – For the second time in the 2019 indoor season and third time in his career, Vlad Pavlenko took down the men's weight throw school record, highlighting Iowa State's day at the Husker Invitational on Friday. Pavlenko's third-place throw of 71-4 (21.74m) betters his previous school record of 71-0 3/4 two weeks ago at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City.
Pavlenko had a solid day at the office going, as his third-round throw of 67-6 (20.59m) had him in third place after three rounds. However, the senior team captain stepped up his game on his final two throws, repeating his mark of 67-6 on his fifth effort, and then firing his school-record effort on his sixth and final throw of the day with the 71-4. At the time of publication, Pavlenko's throw ranks him atop the Big 12 and at No. 8 in NCAA Division I for the season.
The ISU men also enjoyed some impressive performances in the 400-meter dash, with all three entries notching indoor personal bests. The trio was led by Gage Clay, with the freshman dropping 1.3 seconds off his previous best with a 49.50 to win heat two. Ben Kelly won heat three in 49.63, with teammate Charlie Johnson taking second in the heat in 49.96.
Meanwhile for the Cyclone women, Iowa State was able to advance two to the finals in the 60-meter hurdles on Friday evening. Keiara Christie-Galloway will head into tomorrow's final as the No. 2 seed after winning her heat in 8.36. She will be joined by her fellow Canadian Katarina Vlahovic, who qualified in seventh with a personal best 8.59. Vlahovic's mark moves her up to No. 8 in ISU indoor history.
