AMES, Iowa- No. 13 Iowa State (26-8) raced out to an early lead and never looked back in a 97-61Â victory over New Mexico State (26-7) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday evening in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones, who are appearing in their 21st NCAA Tournament, had a balanced attack in the victory with four players scoring in double figures.
Bridget Carleton posted another All-American stat line. The Big 12 Player of the Year tallied 23 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists in the win.
Ashley Joens was two caroms shy of a double-double with 14 points and eight boards, while Ines Nezerwa had a career-high 14 caroms.
Iowa State, which shot 48.6 from the floor and limited the Aggies to just 27.3 percent, held a huge advantage on the glass, outboarding the Aggies, 59-33.
It was ISU's first NCAA Tournament victory since 2013.
How It Happened
Iowa State enjoyed a double-digit lead in the first quarter (20-10) and held a 23-16 advantage after the first break.
The Cyclones broke the game open with an 11-2 run to begin the second quarter. Carleton, Alexa Middleton and Joens all hit 3-pointers to increase the ISU lead to 36-18 with 7:06 left before halftime. The lead ballooned to 24 points at the half (50-26).
Most of ISU's reserves entered with the game out of reach late in the third quarter.
Players of Note
Bridget Carleton posted her 41st career game with 20 or more points, pacing the Cyclones with 23. She was 6-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. She also had seven rebounds and was perfect at the foul line (8-8).
Ashley Joens made an auspicious debut in her first NCAA Tournament game. The rookie scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half. She was 2-of-4 from 3-point range and grabbed eight boards.
