AMES, Iowa – Iowa State freshmen David Carr and Joel Shapiro are headed to the Junior World Team Trials this weekend. The Junior and Senior World Team Trials will be held in Raleigh, N.C., May 17-19.
Also competing this weekend is former Cyclone, and current Cyclone Regional Training Center athlete, Kyven Gadson. Gadson won the U.S. Open in April and will await the winner of the WTT Challenge Tournament on Saturday for a Best-of-Three series on Sunday for a spot at Final X in Lincoln, Neb., on June 15.
At the UWW Junior Nationals in April, Carr won the tournament at 74 kg and is exempt through the Challenge Tournament. He will wrestle the winner of Friday's Challenge Tournament in a Best-of-Three series with a spot on the Junior World Team on the line.
Shapiro finished fourth at the UWW Junior Nationals at 92 kg. His quest for a spot on the Junior World Team begins on Friday morning in the Challenge Tournament. If he wins the Challenge Tournament, he will face Lucas Davison in a Best-of-Three series on Saturday for a spot on the Junior World Team.
The Junior World Championships will take place Aug. 12-18 in Tallinn, Estonia. The Senior World Championships are set for Sept. 14-22 in Astana, Kazakhstan.
