AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's cross country team will begin the 2019 season as the No. 1 team in the Midwest Region, the USTFCCCA announced Monday afternoon. This marks the second-straight season the ISU men will open the season atop the preseason rankings.
Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Martin Smith's squad will look to continue to put up the big performances that they have the past two years, resulting in consecutive Big 12 titles, NCAA Midwest Region crowns and seventh-place finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Leading the way will be senior Edwin Kurgat, the defending Big 12 and Midwest Region champion and the third-place finisher at the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Kurgat had a huge track and field campaign in 2018, earning Big 12 titles indoors at 3,000 and 5,000 meters, First Team All-America honors outdoors at 5,000 meters and the 2018-19 Gary Thompson Iowa State Male Athlete of the Year Award.
Also returning to the Cyclones will be two-time All-Big 12 and All-Midwest Region honoree Milo Greder, 2018 All-Big 12 and All-Midwest Regional runner Chad Johnson and 2017 All-Big 12 and All-Midwest Region and 2019 team captain Thomas Pollard.
Joining the Cyclone fold is two-time cross country All-American and Boise State transfer Addison DeHaven and David Too, who was a member of ISU's track and field team in 2019 and was a conference champion in cross country during his time at Florida A&M.
Smith and the ISU men will open the 2019 cross country season at the John McNichols Invitational, hosted by Indiana State, on Saturday, Sept. 21.
