NEW YORK – Edwin Kurgat added yet another impressive bullet point on his incredible season and Cyclone career on Saturday at the Millrose Games. Kurgat took down ISU's 34-year old school record in the 3,000-meter run, finishing fifth in the Dr. Sander Men's 3,000-meter run at the Armory in New York City at 7:49.19.
Against an elite field which included three Olympians (one of them former Cyclone Hillary Bor), the Cyclone senior showed his stuff against the best of the best. He showed his strength down the stretch to move up the field and bring home fifth place in 7:49.19.
This is Kurgat's third school record of the season, as he had already re-set his previous school record in the 5,000 at 13:24.04 in Boston in December and anchoring ISU's record distance medley relay in 9:28.22 at the Indiana Relays last weekend. The mark also takes down one of ISU's oldest school records, as Kurgat takes the No. 1 spot from Raf Wyns, who sent 7:49.83 in 1986.
At the time of publication, Kurgat ranks No. 2 in NCAA Division I in the DMR and the 5,000m and No. 3 with today's 3,000-meter run performance.
At the Husker Invitational, the Cyclone women were led by a pair of strong performances. Katarina Vlahovic was at it again on Saturday, as for the fifth-straight week the sophomore notched a personal best in her specialty event. The Canadian finished second in 8.33, cutting another two-hundredths off her personal best run at Texas Tech last weekend.
In the women's 600-meter run, Zakiyah Amos brought home the victory, crossing the line first in 1:32.97.
