AMES, Iowa - No. 9 Iowa State (9-3, 8-1 Big 12) wrapped up an historic season by defeating No. 25 Oregon (34-17) in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, the school's first-ever appearance in a New Year's Six bowl. Iowa State tied a school record for wins in a season with nine (1906, 2000) and broke the school record for league wins with eight, claiming sole possession of first place in the final regular season conference standings for the first time in school history (8-1).
Season Highlights
-Iowa State was one of the most successful teams nationally in 2020, securing its first-ever spot in the Big 12 Championship game and earning its highest ranking in school history (No. 6 in the CFP poll).Â
-Iowa State ended the season ranked No. 9 in the AP poll, its highest final season ranking in school history and just the third time a Cyclone team appeared in the final AP poll (1976, 2000).Â
-Iowa State's senior class is the winningest in school history, compiling a 32-19 record during their four years in Ames.Â
-Iowa State set school records with nine All-Big 12 First Team selections and four All-Americans (Breece Hall, JaQuan Bailey, Mike Rose and Charlie Kolar). Â
-The Cyclones defeated three ranked teams (Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon), tying a single-season school record, and have nine wins over top-25 teams since 2017, tying for ninth nationally during that span.Â
-ISU ended the season defeating five teams that qualified for a bowl and played against six opponents ranked in the final CFP poll, the most in the nation.Â
-ISU boasted the NCAA's leading rusher in Breece Hall (1,572). The Big 12 Offensive PoY and Doak Walker Award finalist was the first unanimous First Team All-American in school history. Â
-ISU's offense set school records in rushing TDs (31) and its scoring offense (32.9), yards per play (6.32) and total touchdowns (51) totals rank 2nd all-time.
Season Milestones
-Tied a school record with three wins over ranked opponents (Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon).Â
-Earned a bowl berth for a school-record fourth-straight season.Â
-Tied a school-record with five-straight wins over conference teams.Â
-Was undefeated at Jack Trice Stadium vs. conference teams (5-0) for just the second time in school history (4-0 in 2002).Â
-Owns an active seven-game home-field winning streak, the best in ISU history and best active streak in the league. Â
-When Iowa State defeated No. 18 Oklahoma (37-30) on Oct. 3, it marked the first time in 60 years (1960) the Cyclones beat the Sooners in Ames.Â
-Iowa State defeated both Oklahoma and Texas in the same season for the first time in school history. Both were fourth-quarter come-from-behind victories.Â
-Secured a winning conference season and overall winning season for the fourth-straight year for the first time in modern history (1928-present).Â
-Brock Purdy became the first QB in ISU history to lead the Cyclones to victory over every opponent in the league in a career after knocking off Oklahoma.Â
-Broke school record for most games played as a ranked team with 10.
-Recorded a school-record and Big 12-high nine All-Big 12 First Team selections.Â
-Had a Big 12-best 44 Academic All-Big 12 picks.Â
-Scored 30+ points seven times vs. league teams for the first time in ISU history.Â
-Went 3-1 in October to improve its record in the month since 2017 to 13-2, the second-most wins by a "Power 5" school (Alabama-14) during that span.Â
-Scored 52 points at Kansas, the second-most points vs. a league opponent in the Matt Campbell era (66 vs. TTU in 2016).Â
-Erased a 14-point second-half deficit vs. Baylor, tying for the 12th-best comeback win in school history. It was the third time in the Campbell era the Cyclones rallied from deficits of 14 points or higher (17 vs. Kansas State in 2018; 14 vs. Oklahoma in 2017).Â
-Recorded its second shutout in the Matt Campbell era by blanking Kansas State, 45-0. It was the first shutout in the series since 1978.
-Recorded its second double-digit (10 points) second half comeback win at No. 20 Texas.Â
-ISU's win at No. 20 Texas was the first road victory by ISU in a nationally-ranked matchup in school history.Â
-Cracked the top-10 in the AP poll for the second time in school history (2002).
