AMES, Iowa – No. 13 Iowa State (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) opened its dual season with a pair of victories Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones defeated Army, 25-9, before blanking California Baptist, 39-0.
In the two matches, the Cyclones had five major decisions and four technical falls.
Iowa State-Army Match Highlights
Joel Devine scored Iowa State's first points with a 5-0 decision over Clayton Fielden at 174 pounds. A first-period takedown put Devine ahead and he finished the match riding out Fielden the entire third period.
Marcus Coleman won at 184 pounds, defeating Brad Laughlin, 4-1. After a scoreless first period, Coleman got an escape in period two and was able to stay on top of Laughlin for most of the final stanza before adding a takedown with :16 seconds left.
Yonger Bastida used a pair of takedowns to defeat J.T. Brown, 4-3 at 197 pounds and Kysen Terukina used five takedowns en route to a 12-3 major decision over Jake Staud in the 125-pound bout.
Five takedowns by Ramazan Attasauov propelled him to a 12-4 major decision vs. Mark Montgomery at 133 pounds and Zach Redding escaped with a 6-4 victory at 141 pounds over Julian Sanchez.
National champion David Carr capped off the dual with a technical fall over Markus Hartman in the 157-pound match. Carr turned Hartman for a pair of four-point near falls in the second period and ended the match with another four-pointer at the 6:02 mark.
ISU held the edge in takedowns, 21-8.
Iowa State-California Baptist Match Highlights
After Austin Kraisser opened the dual with a 2-0 win vs Josh Grant at 165 pounds, Joel Devine dominated Louis Rojas with a 19-1 technical fall at 6:35. Devine recorded a trio of four-point near falls in the final two periods.
Marcus Coleman wasted little time in a technical fall (3:55) at 184 pounds against Caden Gerlach. A reversal and his third four-pointer near fall in the second period ended the match.
Yonger Bastida used nine takedowns in his 23-8 technical fall victory over Arick Lopez in the 197-pound match and Sam Schuyler majored decisioned Chris Island (11-2) at 285 to keep the shutout going.
Corey Cabanban (125) Ramazan Attasauov (133) and Zach Redding (141) were victorious in their matches before Jarrett Degen (149) and David Carr (157) finished the dual in convincing wins.
Degen got a four-point near fall in the second and third periods in his 17-4 major decision over Chaz Hallmark and Carr major decisioned A.J. Raya, 14-3.
Carr has won 39-straight matches.
Iowa State had 31 takedowns and held CBU to zero.
