AMES, Iowa – Sami Williams hit a two-run, walk-off home run to propel Iowa State (25-17, 1-10 Big 12) past Baylor (23-13, 4-4 Big 12), 6-4, on Saturday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. It was the senior's 18th home run of the season, breaking the single-season program record of 17 she set in 2019.
The walk-off clinched Iowa State's first conference win of the season, and set up a rubber match on Sunday against the Lady Bears.
Freshman Milaysia Ochoa went 2-of-3 at the plate with a home run, a double and a career high four RBI on the day.
Iowa State 6, Baylor 4
Baylor broke up a quiet start to the game to jump out to a lead in the third inning. Following a pair of scoreless frames, BU's Emily Hott and Goose McGlaun hit back-to-back solo home runs to give the Lady Bears a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third.
However, the Cyclones responded in the home half of the inning. Following a Carli Spelhaug base hit and a Williams walk, freshman Milaysia Ochoa stepped to the plate and looped a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Williams and Spelhaug to knot the game at 2-2.
Baylor's third solo home run of the game came on a one-out shot by Lou Gilbert in the top of the fifth, as BU regained the lead, 3-2.
Ochoa came up big once again in the bottom of the fifth to give Iowa State its first lead of the series. The native of Chino, Calif., crushed a two-run homer to center field to put ISU in front, 4-3. It was Ochoa's fourth home run of the season. Baylor tied the game on a Zadie LaValley RBI double in the sixth.
Relief pitcher Shannon Mortimer, who allowed just one hit in 2.0 innings of work to secure the win, shut down the BU offense in the top of the seventh, setting up Williams' heroics.
Sophomore Carli Spelhaug was hit by pitch to lead off the home half of the seventh, putting the winning run aboard. Williams then came to the plate and, with a 1-2 count, hammered her school record 18th home run of the season over the fence in the right center field to win the game for Iowa State.
