Iowa State 9, Kansas 3
The Jayhawks got off to a fast start, loading the bases in the bottom of the first inning before a Cheyenne Hornbuckle walk brought the first run of the day to the plate. However, pitcher Ellie Spelhaug was able to work her way out of trouble with no further damage done.
Iowa State took advantage of a KU error in the top of the third to even the score at 1-1. Kasey Simpson raced home to score ISU's first run of the day after Carli Spelhaug reached safely on a Jayhawk throwing error.
A Madison Hirsch solo home run down the left field line in the home half of the inning allowed Kansas to retake the lead at 2-1.
The Cyclones took control in the top of the fourth, piling up seven runs on five hits. Freshman Kali Gose tied the game with a RBI single to right field. Iowa State then took its first lead of the day when Skyler Ramos earned a bases-loaded walk to put the Cyclones in front, 3-2.
In the ensuing at-bat, Carli Spelhaug drove a bases-clearing, three-RBI single down the left field line. Ramos, Gose and Alesia Ranches all scored on the play to give ISU a 6-2 advantage. Mikayla Ramos and Milaysia Ochoa then tallied back-to-back RBI base hits, extending the lead to 8-2.
Kansas scored its final run of the day on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Ochoa put the exclamation point on Iowa State's fourth conference win of the season, crushing a solo home run to left field in the top of the seventh inning. The freshman finished the day 3-of-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored to pace the ISU offense.
In the circle, Ellie Spelhaug collected yet another complete game victory. The sophomore improved to 12-5 on the season and had three strikeouts on the day.
