The Jayhawks got out to a fast start, looking to knot the series at 1-1 following Iowa State's 9-3 victory on Friday in game one. Kansas plated two runs on two hits, highlighted by a two-RBI base hit by Madison Hirsch that gave KU a 2-0 lead after one.
Following a pair of scoreless innings, freshman Milaysia Ochoa got the Cyclones on the board in the top of the fourth. The native of Chino, Calif., hit her second home run of the series on a solo shot that cut the KU lead to 2-1.
Ochoa did more damage at the plate in the top of the sixth. The Cyclone right fielder crushed a RBI double off the top of the fence in center field, scoring Sami Williams from second to knot the game at 2-2. Alesia Ranches gave Iowa State its first lead of the day in the following at-bat, collecting a RBI to score Mikayla Ramos. Kali Gose capped the inning by dropping a RBI single into shallow center field, putting the Cyclones in front, 4-2.
Kansas answered in the home half of the inning, tying the game on a two-RBI single by Morgyn Wynne.
Williams was hit by pitch with one out in the top of the seventh, giving Iowa State a go-ahead base runner. Mikayla Ramos would then come through in the clutch. The junior catcher drove a RBI double deep to center field, allowing Williams to score from first base, putting Iowa State in front 5-4.
Relief pitcher Ellie Spelhaug and the Cyclone defense closed the door on the Jayhawks in the home half of the seventh. Spelhaug, who pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowed just two hits and picked up her second win of the series to improve to 13-5 on the season.
Freshman Saya Swain received the start for Iowa State, putting in 1.2 innings of work before junior Shannon Mortimer went the next 4.0 innings.
