MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (8-2, 2-1 Big 12) wraps up the first day of the 2022 Big 12 Championships tied for fourth with 58 points, 10 points behind second. The focal point of the session was set with the 200 medley relay finish as the team fired off the second-fastest time in school history.
The 200 medley relay squad of Emily Haan, Martha Haas, Carley Caughron and Andie Quirke notched fourth with 1:40.13 to begin the Championship, dropping their previous season-best time by 1.45 seconds. The Cyclones came three tenths of a second within the school-record placing team also featuring Haan and Haas. A slim .87 seconds separated second place from fourth.
Iowa State continued adding changes to the record books in the 800 free relay with another all-time performance. Lucia Rizzo, Brinley Horras, Sydney Jackson and Ashley Bengtson stopped the clock fifth at 7:24.02, the new No. 9 top performance in school history.
"Pretty solid night for us," Head Coach Duane Sorenson said. "Our 200 medley relay team just missed the school record, three of our women had lifetime-best splits so it was really fun to see that. Our B and C teams had a lot of lifetime-best splits, really happy with that. In the 800 free relay, Brinley did a great job in her leg, tying her best time ever. We've got to be ready to go tomorrow morning."
Day two events include one-meter diving, the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and the 400 medley relay. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. ET and finals at 6 p.m. Both prelims and finals will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
