ISU Drops Heartbreaker to Texas in Big 12 Opener

AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State (19-14, 0-1 Big 12) dropped its conference opener, 7-5, to Texas (27-10-1, 4-0 Big 12) Friday night at McCombs Field. The Cyclones controlled throughout most of the game and took a two-run lead into the bottom of the seventh but a walk-off, three-run Longhorn homer dealt ISU the loss.
Mikayla Ramos logged her 13th home run of the season while Alesia Ranches posted her seventh multi-RBI game of the year.
Karlie Charles received the starting nod in the circle for Iowa State before giving way to Ellie Spelhaug (5-10) in the third inning. Spelhaug was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits.
Iowa State got to Longhorn starter Estelle Czech early and forced a pitching change after only five batters. Ramos put the Cyclones on the board with a solo shot to left before three consecutive hits, capped by a two-RBI single from Ranches, put ISU on top 3-0 after the visiting half of the first.
The Longhorns would get a run back in the bottom of the opening frame and would tack on another in the third to pull within one after three innings.
A two-run fourth inning stretched the Cyclone lead back to 5-2 after a sac-fly from Skyler Ramos and an RBI-double by Carli Spelhaug.
Texas would get a run back in the bottom of the fifth before its rally in the seventh. Back-to-back singles followed by a Cyclone error loaded the bases with one out for the Longhorns in the final frame. A ground ball to second base gave ISU a game-ending double play opportunity, but Kasey Simpson's tag attempt on the runner just missed and the Cyclones were only able to record an out at first.
The next at-bat, Mary Iahopo delivered a walk-off home run to end the game.

Iowa State looks to even the series with Texas Saturday at 1 p.m. in game two of the series.
