AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State (19-16, 0-3 Big 12) couldn't capitalize on early scoring chances as it fell, 7-2, in the series finale against Texas (29-10-1, 6-0 Big 12) Sunday afternoon at McCombs Field.
The Cyclones left nine runners stranded and were just 2-of-14 with runners in scoring position.
Carli Spelhaug continued her hot-hitting series with another three-hit performance which included a pair of doubles. The junior finished the weekend 7-of-11 with four doubles, a home run and three RBIs.
Kaylee Pond also notched a multi-hit outing with a two-hit, two-RBI day.
Karlie Charles (7-3) hung the loss in the circle for Iowa State after allowing two earned runs on six hits in four nonconsecutive innings.
Iowa State was the first team on the board thanks to a Pond RBI single to center field which scored Spelhaug from second base. The Longhorn centerfielder's throw beat Spelhaug to the plate, but the home plate umpire ruled obstruction and the run counted. The Cyclones threatened for more but ultimately left the bases loaded.
Texas' Mary Iakopo tied the game with one swing of the bat in the second before the Longhorns took the lead in the third on a sac-fly. Saya Swain limited the damage to only a run by forcing a foul pop-up to get the Cyclones out of a bases-loaded jam.
Skyler Ramos reached on a single in the fourth and maneuvered her way to third base but was eventually thrown out at home on a double play to end the ISU half of the fourth. Texas would add a run to its lead on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the frame to make the score, 3-1.
Spelhaug led off the fifth inning with a single before stealing second and advancing to third on an error. Pond then laced a double to right field to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Four runs for Texas in the bottom of the fifth put the game out of reach at 7-2 as the Cyclones were unable to muster a rally late in the game.
