OKLAHOMA CITY – Iowa State (28-27, 6-12 Big 12) bowed out of the Big 12 Championship in the semifinal round after a 5-0 loss to No. 1 Oklahoma (49-1, 17-1 Big 12) Friday afternoon at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.
ISU was unable to get to Oklahoma starter Hope Trautwein, who finished the day with 14 strikeouts and just two hits against her, both of which came off the bat of Alesia Ranches. Kaylee Pond was Iowa State's only other base runner on the afternoon after reaching via walk in the sixth inning.
Ellie Spelhaug (11-18) suffered the loss in the circle after surrendering a grand slam in the first inning, but the Sooners were kept off balance by Iowa State's relievers for the remainder of the game.
Karlie Charles tossed 2.1 innings of relief and gave up only one run on five hits. The Oklahoma bats struggled to make solid contact against Saya Swain as she allowed only one hit and forced seven fly outs and two groundouts to retire nine of the 10 batters she faced.
The Sooners added a run in the second inning to step in front, 5-0, but Iowa State would settle in defensively to post four consecutive scoreless frames to close the game.
