AMES, Iowa – Iowa State defensive coordinator Jon Heacock has been named a Broyles Award nominee as the Cyclone defensive unit continues to be one of the nation's best under his direction. Heacock was one of 57 nominees selected from approximately 1,500 assistant coaches representing 131 FBS programs across the country.
Iowa State is allowing just 19.9 points and on average is giving up just two touchdowns per game. The group has given up 30 points in a game just once this season.
The unit is leading the Big 12 Conference in total defense (329.0 yards per game). The Cyclones are solid against both the run and pass, ranking first in passing defense (204.3) and third in rushing defense (124.7). ISU's team pass efficiency defense is ninth nationally at 110.15.
Iowa State has 15 interceptions as a team, the most by the school since 2009. Safety Jeremiah Cooper is second nationally with five interceptions and four other Cyclones have multiple interceptions.
Under Heacock's direction, Iowa State has ranked in the top three in the Big 12 in total defense in five of the last six seasons.
