HUMBLE, Texas - The Iowa State women's golf team is in contention for their second team victory of the season. After earning the top spot at the San Diego State Classic last time out, the Cyclonitas carried that momentum into the Houston ICON Invitational, held at the Golf Club of Houston.
The team concluded day one of the tournament in second place after firing a combined 24-under through the first two rounds. Iowa State posted back-to-back rounds of 276 and is just one shot back from No. 10 Texas A&M.Â
The team was led by Liyana Durisic who carded rounds of 67 and 68 for a nine-under-par total. Durisic placed in a tie for fifth and recorded an astounding 14 birdies through her 36-holes. The junior sits five shots behind Zoe Slaughter, of Texas A&M, who leads the individual standings portion of the tournament.Â
Pammy Chookaew was second on the team in scoring. The freshman posted back-to-back rounds of 68 to break her career-low 18-hole record. Chookaew finished in a tie for eighth place and was just one birdie short of tying Durisic for the most birdies on the team.
Ruby Chou's 140 (69-71) 36-hole total placed third on the team and put her in a tie for 19th overall. Chou began her week with a three-under 69 that included four birdies and only one bogey. She followed that round up with a one-under round of 71 that consisted of another five birdies.
Taglao Jeeravivitaporn and Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn rounded out the team's top-five. Jeeravivitaporn carded rounds of 72Â and 71Â to finish in a tie for 34th place. Jeeravivitaporn also recorded her 142nd round as a Cyclone, which breaks the all-time total rounds record previously held by Amelia Grohn. The freshman, Chul-Ak-Sorn, started the tournament off slow, but a three-under 69 in the second round puts her right back into contention.Â
Iowa State looks to make it two-straight team victories as they head into the final round of the Houston ICON Invitational, Tuesday, Feb. 28.
