CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Iowa State tennis team opened up the 2023 season Friday at the Wahoowa Invitational, competing in doubles and singles action.
Anna Supapitch Kuearum highlighted the day with wins over Princeton's Maia Sung, 6-3, 7-6 (4), and Maryland's Kallista Liu, 6-4, 6-3. Liu is currently ranked No. 124 in the nation.
This win marks Kuearum's eighth career victory over a ranked opponent and her fourth in singles competition.
Isabella Dunlap scored the first singles and doubles win of her Cyclone tennis career. She and Kuearum took down Maryland's Minorka Miranda and Maria Budin, 7-5, in doubles, and in singles play, she took down Princeton's Eva Elbaz, 6-4, 6-4. Dunlap fell in a heartbreaker in her first singles match as a Cyclone to Virginia's Blanca Pico Navarro, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.
Newcomers Caroline Nicholls and Juliette Nask fell in doubles to Maryland's Kallista Liu and Katherine Hung, 6-2. Nask and Dunlap also fell to Princeton's Maia Sung and Bella Chhiv, 6-4.
In singles action, Nask was downed by Minorka, 6-3, 6-1. Caroline Nicholls battled in her first collegiate singles match, ultimately falling to Hung, 7-5, 6-3.
The tournament will resume Saturday at 9 a.m.
