AMES, Iowa – No. 23 Iowa State (8-2, 0-0 Big 12) swept Ohio (5-6, 0-0 MAC) by set scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-13 Friday night. The Cyclones hit at .376, topping .300 for the third match of the season, while holding Ohio to a .113 efficiency through the night.
Lilly Wachholz put up an elite performance, nailing down 13 kills on just 20 swings without a single error (.650 hitting). Wachholz started out sending over six kills on seven swings in the first set (.857) and continued dominating from there. Wachholz also put up four blocks, tying Pam McCune and Jordan Hopp for the match lead.
SET ONE
ISU went out to a lead of 8-2 as three Cyclones nailed down kills. Ohio rallied back to near the Cyclones lead, but ISU stayed up as Wachholz notched her third kill on just four swings to put it at 14-11. Wachholz continued to lay down kills, getting her fourth as ISU led at 18-12. Ohio then brought it back to a one-point deficit on a run of three kills and an ace. The Bobcats then took their first lead of 21-20, but ISU took the next three to retake the lead going on to reach set point. Wachholz sixth kill ended the set to give Iowa State the 1-0 match lead.
SET TWO
Wachholz kept it rolling tacking on another, her seventh on nine swings to begin the second. Two kills, two blocks and an ace followed before Ohio got on the board at 6-1. The Bobcats again clawed back into the Cyclones lead, coming within a point at 10-9. The sides kept close before Iowa State began to break away at 15-14, winning the second set 25-17 on a Nayeli Gonzalez kill. ISU hit .400 through the set, holding Ohio to .143 hitting.
SET THREE
The score kept close to open the third with the Cyclones ahead at 9-7. ISU stretched a lead from there, running ahead 18-10. Wachholz then continued to add to her kill total without an error, hitting back-to-back kills as ISU reached 20 points (20-10) and Wachholz totaled her 13th. The Cyclones would seal the sweep on a 3-0 run, by a score of 25-13.
NEXT UP
Iowa State closes out the Cyclone Invite and the non-conference schedule tomorrow against Drake at 2 p.m. Following the Cyclone Invite, conference play will begin. Iowa State will start on the road, meeting West Virginia for a series played Sept. 21 and 22.
