Four Cyclones Advance In Main Draw

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Four members of the Iowa State tennis team advanced to the second round of the ITA Central Regional singles main draw in Memphis on Thursday.

After winning her two matches in the qualifying draw Wednesday, Mari Paz Alberto Vilar defeated Oklahoma's Gloriana Nahum, 6-3, 7-5, in the first round of the main draw. Anna Supapitch Kuearum took down the Sooners' Emma Ghirardito, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, to advance to the second round. Alberto Vilar and Kuearum will face Iowa's Daianne Hayashida and Babora Pokorna, respectively, on Friday in round two.

Ashlee Narker downed Janse Heike Van Vuuren from Kansas, 6-4, 6-4, in her first singles match of the tournament. Narker will play the winner of Wichita State's Kristina Kudryavtseva and Tulsa's Maria Berlanga in round two Thursday.

Freshman Julia Camblor defeated Nebraska's Maria Taranova, 6-4, 6-4, to earn a spot in the round of 32 where she'll face either Kansas State's Zali Morris or Oklahoma's Emma Staker. All second round matches will be played at 10 a.m.

Suzanie Pretorius fell to Oklahoma's Ava Catanzarite in a hard-fought three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
