Three Cyclones Advance To Main Draw

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Three Cyclone freshmen advanced to the main draw of the ITA Central Championship with 2-0 performances Wednesday.

Maria Paz Alberto Vilar, Julia Camblor and Suzanie Pretorius were dominant on the first day of the event, which is being held on the campus of the University of Memphis. The trio won both of their matches in straight sets to join teammates Anna Supapitch Kuearum and Ashlee Narker in the main draw.

In the opening round, Alberto Vilar defeated Arkansas' Katie Ferguson, 6-1, 6-3. She followed that with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Wichita State's Theodora Chantava.

Camblor downed Emmerson White of Saint Louis, 6-4, 6-1, and then took down Big Ten foe Emma Rizzetto from Nebraska, 7-5, 6-2.

Pretorius also rolled past a Nebraska opponent, beating Reya Coe, 7-5, 6-4, and downed Kansas City's Catherine Chrobak in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1

Cristina Ramos Sierra and Valeska San Martin Ramirez both split their matches on Wednesday.

Play resumes Thursday with doubles action in the morning and singles play in the afternoon.
