AMES, Iowa – No. 8 Iowa State (3-0, 0-0 Big 12) rolled past Southern (0-3, 0-0 SWAC), 84-56 on Sunday afternoon.
The Cyclones got out to a 17-0 start in the first quarter and never looked back. The Cyclones had three players score in double figures as Audi Crooks and Addy Brown recorded double-doubles.
How it Happened
Crooks opened the scoring for the Cyclones, tallying the game's first four points. The Cyclones eventually jumped out to a commanding 17-0 lead over the Jaguars after scoring contributions from Brown, Kenzie Hare and Arianna Jackson. Alisa Williams hit a buzzer-beating layup to give the Cyclones a 23-13 lead at the end of the first.
Southern cut the deficit to single digits early in the second period, but Crooks put the Cyclones back up by 10 with a three-point play that also put her over the double-digit scoring mark in the game. The Jaguars would not back down though, trimming the deficit all the way down to 30-24. However, a pair of threes from Sydney Harris and Emily Ryan helped put the Cyclones back up double-digits, where they'd stay at the rest of the half and take a 47-28 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter started back-and-forth with the Cyclones' lead staying between 17 and 21 points until the under-five media timeout. Crooks grabbed her 10th rebound to secure another double-double early in the period. After the media timeout, the Jaguars once again chipped away at ISU's lead, pulling within 12. The Cyclones responded by rattling off 10-straight points to take a 66-44 lead with 2:01 left in the quarter. The Cyclones ended the period with a 69-46 lead.
The fourth quarter began with Emily Ryan's second made three of the game in three attempts. Ryan also recorded her 10th assist of the game in the final quarter, her 19th career game with double-digit assists and first of the season. The Cyclones won by a final score of 84-56.
