AMES, Iowa – No. 8 Iowa State (5-1, 0-0 Big 12) came away with a last-second victory over in-state foe Drake (2-2, 0-0 MVC), 80-78 in Hilton Coliseum on Sunday. The Cyclones improved to 5-1 on the season by winning the back-and-forth battle.
Audi Crooks led the way for the Cyclones with 33 points, four rebounds and the game-winning layup with :00.3 remaining. Addy Brown, Emily Ryan and Kenzie Hare also scored in double figures for the Cyclones with 13, 11 and 10, respectively. Ryan also had 12 assists in 37 minutes.
How it Happened
After starting the game down 5-0, the Cyclones answered with their own 5-0 run off an Addy Brown layup and Kenzie Hare three-pointer. The Bulldogs took back the lead and entered the first quarter media timeout with a 10-7 advantage. The Bulldogs got a three-pointer to fall after the media timeout, but Iowa State would respond with a 10-0 run thanks to two layups from Audi Crooks and triples from Arianna Jackson and Sydney Harris. After a back-and-forth last few minutes in the period, Brown nailed a three to break a 21-21 tie and give the Cyclones a three-point lead heading into the second.
Crooks scored two quick buckets to start the second to reach double-figures and extend the Cyclones' lead to two possessions early in the quarter. Drake responded however, eventually pulling within one point. The Cyclones then had their own response, going on a 9-0 run and extending their lead to 40-30 with four minutes to play in the first half. The Bulldogs once again had an answer and trimmed the Cyclone lead to just 45-44 at the half.
Drake started the second half by hitting a triple to give them a 47-45 lead, but the Cyclones quickly responded with an Emily Ryan three and Crooks and-one to put them back on top by four. The teams traded a few baskets each and Iowa State took a 59-54 lead into the third quarter media timeout. After the Bulldogs pulled within two, the Cyclones pushed their lead to double digits at 67-57. The Bulldogs scored the last five points of the period to put the score at 67-62 entering the final quarter.
Drake came out swinging in the fourth, going on an 8-2 run to re-gain the lead. The Bulldogs would take a 72-71 lead into the final media timeout with 4:44 remaining. Brown put the Cyclones back on top, 73-72, with 4:20 remaining. A pair of layups from Crooks and Ryan gave the Cyclones a 77-73 lead with 30 seconds left, but Drake hit a three to pull within one. After Hare went one for two from the free throw line, the Bulldogs hit a game-tying layup with nine seconds remaining. But Crooks showed her clutch ability in the final seconds as she hit the game-winning layup with 0.3 seconds left to give the Cyclones an 80-78 victory over their in-state foe.

Audi Crooks totaled 33 points on 60 percent shooting from the field, including the game-winning layup. Crooks also added four rebounds in her 28 minutes.
