AMES, Iowa – Two Cyclones represented Iowa State at the launch of the Big 12 Beyond Borders program, a two-year program that immerses those selected in historical and cultural experiences in the U.S. and internationally.
Rachel Joseph from track and field and Xavier Bruening from wrestling are Iowa State's representatives after being selected for demonstrating exceptional leadership and character in and out of competition.
The duo recently returned from this year's program in Washington, D.C. Joseph and Bruening had the opportunity to visit Capitol Hill and meet congressional members and senators, visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and take part in a community service project at a local elementary school.
The program aims to have participants gain a global perspective and develop future leaders and changemakers through practical application, seminars, workshops, group discussions, and experimental learning opportunities.
In year two, Joseph and Bruening will travel to Mexico City for further involvement in the program.
