INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Iowa State seniors Joshua Jefferson and Tamin Lipsey have been named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List. Iowa State joins Purdue and Texas Tech as the only schools with multiple players on the 25 player list.
With two months to go until the NCAA Tournament, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association is releasing its Midseason Watch List for the "Big O" Trophy today. The award is handed out annually at the men's Final Four to the best player in college basketball and has been named after Robertson since the 1997-98 season. Its origins date back to 1958-59; the Oscar Robertson Trophy is the longest-running POY award in college basketball.Â
"Our list is 25 names deep, but in tabulating the ballots, there are 30-plus players who have a viable case to be included," USBWA President Matt Norlander said. "The next eight weeks are going to be riveting and could wind up producing a second straight season with a fantastic, up-for-grabs race for the best player in college basketball. All signs indicate we are in the midst of one of the best seasons for the sport in the past 25 years."
Jefferson leads the Cyclones with 17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. He is the only player in the country averaging those numbers this season, while just five other players have done so in an entire season since 1996-97. No player in Big 12 history has averaged those numbers in a season.Â
Tamin Lipsey is averaging 10.7 points, 4.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game in his career. He is one of 16 players since 1947-48 to average those numbers in a career while playing at least 115 games. He is one of just eight from a Power Conference to do so. His 270 career steals are the most in program history and the fourth-most in Big 12 history.
