TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – After Day One of the Florida State Invite, Iowa State trails Florida State 125-162 at the Morcom Aquatics Center. Junior Grace Swoboda had a record-setting day in the breaststroke events that charged up the Cyclones.
How It Happened
In the 50 Breast, Grace Swoboda continues her winning streak in breaststroke, and her time of 27.75 seconds set a new meet record. This effort was then eclipsed by herself in the 200 Breast. Her first-place time of 2:11.18 not only set a new meet record, but set a new school record, surpassing Kasey Roberts' record that has been held since the 2014-15 season.
"I was super excited for her," said head coach Matt Leach. "[Grace] swam a great race, very consistent all the way through…it's been a really great job of racing and taking it one thing at a time."
The 50 Breast also saw Kendall Schindler grab points in third and he same from Anja Peck from a fourth-place finish in the 200 Breast.
The morning session started with finishes in the 200 Free by junior Piper Hagen in third and freshman Claire Dobrydney in fourth, grabbing the Cyclones 11 points.
Iowa State continued this 11-point streak in the following events:
On the boards, freshman Katie Malm showcased her talent once again in the 1-meter with another runner-up finish and another NCAA Zone-cut score.
"[Katie] did another great job…getting another Zone cut and going better than what she did last weekend," Coach Leach remarks. "I think the atmosphere and vibes on our diving program are amazing."
Coach Leach also commented on the strong connection and synergy of the entire team. "It's really cool to have other people invested in each other and taking really big steps forward. When anyone does well or something fast, it's a team win, not as much as it is an individual win. Go Cyclones!"
