SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Iowa State forward Joshua Jefferson has been named to the Karl Malone Award Midseason Top 10. Jefferson is among 10 power forwards in the country named to the list. Former Cyclone Georges Niang was the second winner of the award in 2016.
This is the third Cyclone this week named to the Naismith Starting 5 Awards, as point guard Tamin Lipsey was named to the Bob Cousy Award Top 10 on Monday and Milan Momcilovic was named to the Julius Erving Award Top 10 on Wednesday. Iowa State and Arizona are the only schools in the country with at least three student-athletes on the Naismith Starting 5's of the four list that are out.
Jefferson has once again been Mr. Do-It-All for the Cyclones this year. He's averaging 17.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He's the only Power Conference player in the country to average those numbers. Only six players have done so in an entire season in the country going back to 1974-75, with no one in the Big 12 having accomplished it. He turned in triple-doubles against West Virginia and UCF, becoming the first player in Big 12 history to have multiple triple-doubles against league opponents in a career, while doing so in the same season.
The annual Karl Malone Award, named after the Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, celebrates its 12th year by recognizing the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in both of the remaining rounds starting on Friday, February 6, on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
In mid-March, the Mid-Season Top 10 list will be narrowed to just five, and in late March, the five finalists will be presented to Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committees, where the winner will be selected. The Selection Committee for the Karl Malone Award is composed of top men's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.
The winner of the 2026 Malone Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward) and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center).
Previous winners of the Karl Malone Award are Johni Broome, Auburn (2025), Jaedon LeDee, San Diego State (2024), Trayce Jackson-Davis, Indiana (2023), Keegan Murray, Iowa (2022), Drew Timme, Gonzaga (2021), Obi Toppin, Dayton (2020), Zion Williamson, Duke (2019), Deandre Ayton, Arizona (2018), Johnathan Motley, Baylor (2017), Georges Niang, Iowa State (2016), and Montrezl Harrell, Louisville (2015).
