SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Iowa State forward Joshua Jefferson has been named a finalist for the Karl Malone Award. Jefferson is among five power forwards in the country that made it to the final stage. Former Cyclone Georges Niang was the second winner of the award in 2016.
So far this season, Jefferson has been named a First Team All-American by The Sporting News, while he was also an All-Big 12 First Team selection. He's the 31st All-American in school history and the third to be named a firs team selection by one of the four major outlets.
Jefferson was Mr. Do-It-All once again for the Cyclones, as he became the first player in Big 12 history to turn in multiple triple-doubles in Big 12 play. He's averaging 16.7 points, 7.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He's the only Power Conference player in the country to average those numbers. Only five players have done so in an entire season in the country going back to 1974-75, with no one in the Big 12 having accomplished it. Jefferson has scored in double figures in all 32 games this season, while his streak of 38-straight games going back to last season ranks as the third-longest in the nation.
Earlier this week, Iowa State junior Milan Momcilovic was named a finalist for the Julius Erving Award, giving the Cyclones two finalist on the five awards that are handed out by the Hoop Hall of Fame.
The annual Karl Malone Award, named after the Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, celebrates its 12th year by recognizing the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in both of the remaining rounds starting on Friday, March 13, on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
In late March, the five finalists will be presented to Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committees, where the winner will be selected. The Selection Committee for the Karl Malone Award is composed of top men's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.
The winner of the 2026 Malone Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward) and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center).
Previous winners of the Karl Malone Award are Johni Broome, Auburn (2025), Jaedon LeDee, San Diego State (2024), Trayce Jackson-Davis, Indiana (2023), Keegan Murray, Iowa (2022), Drew Timme, Gonzaga (2021), Obi Toppin, Dayton (2020), Zion Williamson, Duke (2019), Deandre Ayton, Arizona (2018), Johnathan Motley, Baylor (2017), Georges Niang, Iowa State (2016), and Montrezl Harrell, Louisville (2015).
