OMAHA, Neb. – Iowa State (16-10, 0-3 Big 12) took care of business in its first midweek contest of the season, handling Creighton (12-17, 4-2 BIG EAST) by a score of 6-2 on the road.
The Cyclones notched 12 hits in the win, as the team has now had double-figure hits in two of its last three outings. Four Cyclones finished with a pair of hits, and eight of the nine Cyclones that took an at-bat collected a knock. Outside of a three-hit third from the Bluejays, ISU completely shut down the Creighton offense.
For Iowa State, Reagan Bartholomew, Sydney Malott, Kadence Shepherd and Hayleigh Oliver all collected a pair of hits in the win. Mallot, Shepherd and Bartholomew each had two RBI as the three accounted for all six Cyclone runs. On top of her two hits, Bartholomew also drew a game-high two walks.
Liv Palumbo got the start in the circle, pitching the first three innings and allowing two runs on three hits. Lauren Schurman (7-2) entered at the start of the fourth inning and dealt four shutout innings of relief, picking up a pair of punchouts along the way. Neither would allow a walk in the win.
For Creighton, the first two batters accounted for both RBI and two of the team's three hits. Brooklyn Patchen started the game for the Bluejays, but after surrendering a pair of solo shots was replaced by Ava Drehs. Drehs (3-2) gave up four runs on seven hits and picked up the loss.
How it Happened
Iowa State was able to get runners in scoring position in each of the first two frames, but would strand three in the process. On the flip side, Palumbo had retired the first six batters she'd faced as the game went to the third frame.
In the third, Bartholomew took a 1-0, two-out pitch, deep over the center field fence to put the Cyclones on the board and put ISU up, 1-0.
Creighton answered in the bottom half as the Bluejay bats started to heat up. With a runner on second and two outs, an RBI double would tie things up before an RBI single would give CU the lead, 2-1.
In the fourth, ISU had a response in the form of a Malott long ball as the senior collected her 100th career RBI on a solo blast to tie things up at two-all.
The Cyclones really broke things open in the fourth, stringing together five hits to plate four runs and take a commanding 6-2 lead. Jessie Clemons led the frame off with a double - her 100th career hit. A single through the left side off the bat of Bartholomew would score her and put the Cyclones up 3-2. With runners on second and third with one out, Malott delivered a knock to plate another run and make it 4-3. Again, with one out and two in scoring position, Shepherd delivered a base hit to score two and extend the lead to four runs.
Creighton would not have any baserunners in the final four frames as Schurman shut things down, earning her seventh win of the season and ISU its 16th.
