AMES, Iowa – Several young runners on the Iowa State men's cross country team gained racing experience at the Cyclone Preview Friday morning.
Three freshmen led the way for ISU, all finishing in the top 20 individually to help the Cyclones to a third-place team finish at their first of three home meets this season.
"I'm very excited to have cross country back underway," said head coach Jeremy Sudbury. "Today's performance was a great opportunity to see our young athletes go out there and compete. We've got some work to do, but I think that's what's most exciting. It's September fourth and we're a whole twelve weeks away still until the national championships, so we have a lot of time to build. But ultimately today was a great chance to bust some rust, and we can't wait until the next one."
The freshmen trio of Jaden Merrick (5th), Mikah Peters (13th) and Carson Driemeier (18th) led the way for Iowa State. Dylan Maloney just missed the top 25 with a 26th-place finish while Matthew Shelly (32nd) and Kipruto Koech (38th) were top 40 finishers.
