Nawal El-Moutawakel-Bennis excelled at Iowa State, capturing the national championship in the 400-meter hurdles in 1984. She also earned All-America honors in the 400-meter run that same year. In 1984, El-Moutawakel-Bennis became only the second woman to capture a relays triple crown, winning the same event at the Texas, Kansas and Drake Relays. The Cyclone standout earned four Big Eight titles. El-Moutawakel-Bennis captured the 400-meter hurdles gold medal and Olympic record at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The Cyclone trackster became the first African woman, the first Arabic woman and the first ISU track athlete to capture an Olympic gold medal.
