Bryce Paup is in his first season as assistant defensive line coach at Iowa State after spending the previous seven seasons at UNI. In 2022, he was named assistant head coach in addition to his defensive line responsibilities.
In total, Paup spent 11 seasons on the coaching staff at his alma mater. Between stints, the Scranton, Iowa, native spent the 2017 season at Minnesota.
Five of Paup’s defensive linemen earned All-America accolades during his tenure with the Panthers, including first-team picks Karter Schult and Jared Brinkman. Ten times his defensive linemen earned spots on the All-Missouri Valley Football Conference first team.
Paup had an outstanding NFL career, being named NFL Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-Pro in 1995 while playing for the Buffalo Bills. He was a four-time NFL Pro Bowler and had stints with Green Bay, Jacksonville and Minnesota, in addition to the Bills.
Paup totaled 545 career tackles and 75.0 sacks, including an NFL-best 17.5 sacks during his pro bowl season in 1995.
At UNI, Paup was a three-year starter at inside and outside linebacker, defensive end and nose tackle. He compiled 298 tackles and 15 sacks in his career as a Panther. In 1989, Paup was named All-Gateway Conference honors and was a Third-Team All-American by the Associated Press.
Following his collegiate career, Paup was a sixth-round pick in the 1990 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers.
Paup earned his bachelor’s degree from UNI in liberal arts in 2017.
